Ty Willingham

by DAVE MCMILLIAN

In 2002, I wrote my first college sports article on the hiring of Tyrone Willingham at Notre Dame. The title of my article was “And then there were FOUR.” The FOUR referenced the total number of black coaches in NCAA Division 1-A football. At the time of Willingham’s hiring (Tyrone was Notre Dame’s third choice), it was kind of a big deal in college sports and was thought to have been the spark in dispelling the myth that blacks have the ability to run the plays, but are unable to call the plays. Boy! Were we wrong. I have always felt that celebrating “firsts” in racial equality in the “new millennium” was a step backwards. My thinking is, “Why are we rejoicing about a slow and unhurried progress towards racial equality? It has been decades since the Civil Rights movement?” But there is my mistake… “decades,” not centuries. Americans often pretend that Segregation and the Civil Rights movement predated the dinosaurs, but the truth of the matter is that there is still a living generation of conservative bigots from that time period, who control the purse strings at our colleges and universities.

Plaxico Burress

by MARK GREY

Over the last two weeks, I've sat back and watched the fall-out of the Plaxico Burress shooting. The media has labeled him a thug, thrown his name in with the Pacman Joneses and Chris Henrys of the sporting world, and his own team has said it wants nothing to do with him. The mayor of New York even spoke out and expressed his interest in seeing Burress behind bars, or should I say, “prosecuted to the fullest.” While I have never been the biggest Plaxico fan in the world and have often wondered what he was thinking when he did that, when I heard Plaxico was carrying a gun in New York city, I knew exactly what he was thinking and I have no problem with it.

Rasheed Wallace - Detroit Pistons

12-02-2008

by MARK GREY

10. Antwan Jamison - Mr. Trick Shot himself, there is nowhere on the court Jamison can't score from. Jamison has a knack for hitting shots in all kinds of positions. Jamison has been underrated for years and is one of only a few 20 and 10 guys left in the NBA.

9. David West - One of the best young stars in the league, West has a midrange jumper that most powerfowards could only dream of.  Along with Chris Paul, he has worked that high pick and roll to perfection and last year it took them all the way to the Western Conference finals. The best part about West is that he is still young and will only get better.

8. Rasheed Wallace - One of the most complete big men in the NBA. Wallace has the ability to dominate the paint as well as the perimeter. As good as he is on the block, Rasheed bails the defense out too much by settling for the three. Wallace is one the best team defenders in the league and has a great shooting touch to go along with long arms and quick feet.
